Whilst there is no Premier League football return on the horizon football fans across the world would have been delighted to see the return of the German Bundesliga given the green light.
Europe’s top leagues have not seen a ball kicked since early March following Coronavirus lockdown procedures, so with football fans ready to settle down on Saturday to get their football fix, here are five players I think are worth casting your eyes on.
Timo Werner – RB Leipzig
Perhaps it’s not a surprise to see Werner on the list after having a storming season before the season was suspended. The 24-year-old has dazzled the fans at The Red Bull Arena scoring an incredible 21 goals in just 25 games. Werner’s intense speed and rapid acceleration partnered with his calmness in front of goal is enough to give defenders nightmares and with recent reports of a potential move to Liverpool, it would be an opportunity missed if you didn’t see what he’s capable of.
Erling Haaland – Borussia Dortmund
Another striker who will no doubt make it to the very top of the game, Haaland joined Dortmund from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg for just £18 million and has already proven himself to be an absolute bargain. The 19-year-old scored 9 goals in just 8 games in the league, including a 23-minute hat-trick on his debut, and has given the Signal Iduna Park fans hope of a striker that can have them challenge the dominance of Bayern Munich. Club captain Marco Reus has likened the style of Haaland to former Dortmund man Robert Lewandowski and looks destined to follow in his goalscoring capabilities.
Kai Havertz – Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Germany have been blessed with outstanding attacking midfielders in the past and Havertz looks set to make sure that continues for years to come. Despite being just 20-years-old, Havertz has already made 110 appearances for the German side and it’s easy to see why. With vision and composure to rival that of Mesut Ozil, Havertz has scored six goals and provided five assists in 22 games this season but it’s his incredible passing ability and trickery which has caught the attention of Europe’s largest clubs. Despite his young age he runs the midfield show with easy and I would highly recommend you treat yourself to the show that is Kai Havertz.
Dayot Upamecano – RB Leipzig
No doubt the name of this French defender is the first thought of Arsenal and Manchester United fans who have both been linked with the 21-year-old over the past couple of transfer windows. Upamecano boasts both pace and power to help him deal with the intense nature of the German game, combined with a calmness on the ball beyond his years which sees him as one of the most sort after defenders in the game. A fantastic tackler with his incredible strength and impeccable timing, Upamecano will reach the very top of the game sooner rather than later.
Robin Quaison – FC Mainz
Whilst he may not be the first name you think of when you say Bundesliga, there’s no denying Quaison has had a very impressive season so far. In a so-far underwhelming season for FC Mainz, the 26-year-old has been a shining light with 12 goals in 24 games in the league so far this season meaning only Werner, Lewandowski and Sancho have scored more which is no shame at all. The 26-year-old Swedish international won’t be short of offers this summer. His sensational strike against FC Koln also saw him win goal of the month and is certainly one to keep an eye on this weekend.
